“Heart of the Ocean”: the story of the most famous Hollywood jewelry
Time does not stand still. Today, in the era of the triumph of cinema, when new masterpieces are released at least every month, it is difficult to imagine the times when the release of a single film was a sensation.
Even if you were a ten-year-old child in the late nineties, chances are that you remember the date of 1997 – the time of the release of the legendary Titanic James Cameron. A touching story of the feelings of poor artist Jack and rich aristocrat Rose, the world of luxury and love, large-scale filming of a gigantic catastrophe, taking the soundtrack of Celine Dion as a soul … All this remained in the memory of everyone who at least once watched the three-hour story about the crash of the Titanic.
And if you try to recall the image of the main character, then for sure the first thing you will remember about her is the necklace “heart of the ocean” – a large pendant that adorned the neckline of Rose. This piece of jewelry – a deep blue stone crafted by jewelers in the shape of a heart – has become one of the most coveted items for all fans of the film. To wear jewelry from the movie “Titanic” – every girl dreamed about it, and that is why the notorious heart became the number one copy accessory. These replicas were distinguished by varying degrees of “reliability.” It is clear, for example, that the blue heart of glass is jewelry, and not of the elite class at all. But the jewelers tried to get closer to the ideal shown by Cameron, and made more and more “hearts”. And the number of people who want to try on the “pendant from the Titanic”, meanwhile, is not getting smaller …
Heart of the Ocean: role in the film
If you look at many works – at least cinema, at least literature – then you will surely be able to notice the so-called ring composition. It is easy to guess what it is: when at the beginning and end of the film it is said the same thing, that is, a peculiar circle, a ring is formed. This is a very beautiful technique, because such a loop makes the story complete, suggests that it is important for the author.
Remember the Titanic? It begins with a “heart-shaped” blue diamond: the aged Rose talks about a drawing that was found by a treasure seeker many decades after the Titanic sank. The figure, if you remember, depicts the heroine herself: she is painted by Jack, the poor guy with whom she falls in love. Rose lies on the couch, and from the clothes on it – only the notorious “heart of the ocean.” A few hours after completing this drawing, the Titanic will collide with an iceberg, suffer the largest shipwreck in history, Jack will die from hypothermia in icy water, and Rose will miraculously escape. Saved in order to live to an advanced age, preserving the love of Jack and the blue diamond. In the finale, an aged heroine throws a pendant into the ocean, and her blue heart goes straight to her lover, forever young Jack. Such a loopback is an ingenious move of the author.
However, the stone accompanies the heroes throughout the film. Rose tells Jack how she got a giant diamond. The fact is that the suspension was presented to her by her fiancé, a wealthy and odious Caledon. Rose reports that this jewel has an incredibly long and complex history, for example, that it once belonged to the French king Louis XVI. Actually, it was the necklace that became the reason that Jack and Rose had to quarrel. According to her fiance, the poor artist needed only the jewel owned by the girl. True, Caledon failed to realize his cunning plan, and the beloved remain together until Jack’s death.
Why did Cameron pendant
As you can see, the screen time at the “heart of the ocean” is almost the same as that of the heroine Kate Winslet herself. So, this stone was very important for the director, was truly symbolic. Cameron’s “peculiarity” is known: he is very responsibly preparing for the shoot. So, before starting to tell a story about the death of the Titanic, he spent a lot of time in the archives, thoroughly studying all the details of the famous shipwreck. The costumes of the heroes, the appearance of the ship, all the details of the interior – all this is written out with love and thoroughness. Cameron even forced the heroes to take lessons in good manners, so that they could more easily “transform” into aristocrats of the early twentieth century. They say that the director even selected the actors so that they looked like real passengers and crew members of the unsuccessful ship.
And the pendant was no less important detail for him, since this situation is partially based on real events. The story of the young Kate Florence Philips is known. The twenty-year-old girl worked as an assistant to businessman Henry Samuel Morley, from the UK. Falling in love with a married boss (mutual love, note) led to the fact that the heroes decide to go on a liner to a new life. Simply put, escape from the old world. A wealthy lover gave the girl a luxurious necklace, in the center of which was a blue stone – sapphire, and surrounded by several small diamonds.
